#1-What happens when Gringos and Expats try do to everything themselves with no outside help?
What can go wrong? Practically everything and/or practically nothing! Yes some come down and try to do it all themselves. Mostly because they don’t want to pay a lawyer (even though they are ridiculously cheap). DYI attempts are a common theme for backpackers, cheapskates and adventurous chance-takers. People with a lot more time than money will attempt to get bank accts, driver’s licenses, internet and utility hookups, even temporary and permanent residency. Yes it can be done, but with much perseverance, wasted time, endless line-standing, hand wringing, wheel spinning and false starts. That's why it’s the topic of today’s “boots on the ground” story.
#2- More and more US military vets are choosing to live permanently in Latin America.
I wonder why? Most of them have served around the world and have seen and heard many things we haven't. Obviously they know something the rest of the US citizen lemmings don’t or they would had stayed in Cleveland.
#3-Gringo / Expat Lonely Hearts Club Pilgrimages - PART 2
Gringos, mostly first-world losers in the love and romance department, have discovered the plethora of Latin American cupid and dating sites. It usually goes down like this.. the gringo guy first hooks up online then make one or more visits down to connect with the online “sweetheart or sweethearts" … only to find most online girls are not exactly the same free-spirited sweethearts they had been chatting with. They soon find out that most all of these Latinas come with a whole lotta baggage. But gringos have their share of first world excessive baggage too. Yes, love is a battlefield and many gringos get their purple hearts here on foreign Latin soil. But all is not lost....

#1-The Gringo / Expat Lonely Hearts Club Band- PART 1
Gringos, mostly first-world losers in the love and romance department, have discovered the plethora of Latin American cupid and dating sites.
And it usually goes like this.. the gringo guy first hooks up online then make one or more visits down to connect with the online “sweetheart” … only to find most online girls are not exactly the same free-spirited sweethearts they had been chatting with. They soon find out that most these Latinas come with a whole lotta baggage. Yes it’s a minefield out there and many gringos get taken for a ride…
#2- Latin drunk driving laws are extremely lax and go virtually unpunished compared to the reaming you get from the authorities in the states:
That’s one reason why such a high percentage of Latin men (it’s always the men), when in the states illegally, get picked up for one or more DUIs or worse. There are many many such reports of accidents injuries and deaths perpetrated by intoxicated illegals (with or without fake licenses), but the mainstream media doesn’t like to cover that kind of stuff. Why? because it’s bad PR for the open border lamebrains.
#3-Prejudice and racism within Latin populations:
There are many Latin countries like Brazil, Venezuela, Cuba and Dominican Republic where color based racism is not much of an issue. However there are Latin countries where class/color prejudice and racism far outpaces anything you may have witnessed in the USA.
#4- Millions of Venezuelan migrants have overstayed their welcome and are taking their toll on the neighboring countries: When a few tricked in all was fine but suddenly they are not much welcomed anymore. Citizens of other Latin countries are getting pretty pissed off at them for various reasons and voicing it openly too (sound familiar). Well, well..talk about Karma..

#3-How “lag time” has put the breaks on the feminism and Social justice warrior movements in Latin America.'Yes, the activist are in and around Latin America and yes, they are taking their cues from what’s happening up in the states but…..
#4- Though all 20 Latin countries have Spanish as their main language, people in different Latin countries speak it with slightly different accents:When you start hearing and distinguishing those accents you’ll know your Spanish is getting pretty good. As for me, there are two Latin countries that I think have the coolest and most rhythmic accents of all. They are….

Descriptions- EXPAT FILES SHOW #792 SUN, SEPT 21- (09-21-2018):
#1-Big Brother Influence and penetration in Latin America:
How pervasive is it? What Latin countries are serious about implementing it US style. What about the presence of that good old “lag time” effect?
#2- We know all about the cancer called socialism and its malignant effects in Latin America via Venezuela and Cuba. Even so, people never learn and are doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past: Sound familiar? That said, what Latin countries are next in line to follow down that sad and depressing trail? Some are on the road to ruin already.
#3-Seems everyone in Latin America wants to get a job in their own government bureaucracy, and for good reason: Most Latin governments pay twice the rate of similar positions in the private sector and believe it or not there is one particular Latin country that routinely pays up to THREE times the private sector going rate. Can you guess that Latin country? Nope, it’s not Costa Rica.
#4- Ten reasons why I personally would visit, but never want to live in, Uruguay, Argentina or Colombia:
Although they really were pretty good expat “Plan B” choices some five or ten years ago, turns out rags and blogs like AARP, Living Overseas and International Living and others have helped kill the goose that laid the golden egg.
#5-Ten good reasons why retiring into the sunset by sucking down Mai-tais on your beachfront property ain’t what it’s cracked up to be.

#2- Handicapped and mobility challenged gringos and expats in Latin America- PART 1:
Today we have a quite extensive “boots on the ground” segment presented to us by a blind American who has lived and traveled in many places in Latin America.
#3- When Gringos and Expats get bad advice;
Gringo retirement rags, blogs, books and outfits like International Living are big on giving green gringos "expert" advice and they are excellent at furthering their own agendas- as well as pushing their own land a real estate projects. The problem is that they almost always give the so-called hot scoop on Latin destinations way too late… long after the party’s over and ship has sailed. So then what’s an expat gonnabee or wannabee to do?

Descriptions- EXPAT FILES SHOW #788 FRI, SEPT 07- (09-07-2018):
#1-When Gringos rip-off Gringos- PART 2:
It’s a well-established pattern. Long-term Gringos with larceny in their hearts continuously hatch schemes to rip-off short term/newly arrived Gringos. Why does it keep happening? And why, when they get caught, do they not up in court, or jail… but instead pop-up elsewhere with a new twist on an old racket?
#2- So you’ve finally arrived in Latin American and plan to stay, and you have money to invest:Who do you trust for advice? … your new gringo buddy(s) who seem to really know the ropes, or your new English speaking Latin buddy(s) who grew up in your newly adopted homeland and definitely know the lay of the land?
#3-Can criminal stains be removed from your police or FBI report?
A criminal background check is a requisite when applying for residency in any Latin country. But sometimes when requesting a police or FBI report – there is an old college era misdemeanor or two or even a DUI? How does that play with the Latin bureaucrats? Will it automatically disqualify you? Are you forever SOL in your quest for Latin residency?

#1-Lost in translation: the English language versus Spanish language
Cultural bias, nationalism and sensitive egos prevail in so-called in Latin American “educated” circles if one (especially a gringo) happens to bring up the fact that English is more flexible for writers than is Spanish.Bringing up the fact that there is only one Spanish language book (Don Quixote)listed in definitive lists of “the 100 most influential fiction works of all time” just seems to irritate and piss off most Latins (meaning the tiny percentage who actually read)
#2- The truth about upscale Latins who live in their exclusive cultural “bubbles”
#3-What you don’t know about chickens could fill a hen-house
#4- Will the influx of gringos and insurance kill cheap and good Healthcare in Latin America?
